This story was part of a one-hour special called Ice Cream Nation that showcased amazing ice cream desserts throughout the U.S. I produced and wrote this piece in Hawaii for air on Cooking Channel. It profiles Hula Pie, a masterpiece featuring vanilla macadamia nut ice cream, an Oreo cookie crust and hardened fudge with chocolate and macadamia nuts on top. For many years the 50-year-old pie stood out as the only dessert on a crowded menu in one of Honolulu’s most popular restaurants.
